Bible verses about family

Key passages on households, parenthood, children, mutual responsibility, and the way family life is placed under the Lord’s claim.

What does the Bible say about family?

The Bible speaks about family with both affection and seriousness. Households are places of blessing, teaching, duty, conflict, inheritance, discipline, and worship. Scripture does not sentimentalize family, but neither does it treat it as spiritually disposable.

These verses help when you are searching for Bible passages about family, parenting, or home life. Read them together and family appears as a sphere of love and responsibility that must be ordered under God rather than under convenience alone.

Key passages

Joshua 24:15

"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

Household loyalty is explicitly placed under the service of the Lord. It is essential that the service of God's people be performed with a willing mind. For LOVE is the only genuine principle whence all acceptable service of God can spring.

Psalms 127:3

"Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward."

Children are spoken of here as inheritance and gift. This verse speaks in the wider setting of prayer and praise as Psalms unfolds its message.

Proverbs 22:6

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

The proverb underscores early formation and moral training. Train children, not in the way they would go, that of their corrupt hearts, but in the way they should go; in which, if you love them, you would have them go.

Ephesians 6:4

"And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."

Paul addresses parenting in a way that is both firm and restrained. The great duty of children is, to obey their parents. That obedience includes inward reverence, as well as outward acts, and in every age prosperity has attended those distinguished for obedience to parents.

Colossians 3:20

"Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord."

Household order is treated as part of Christian obedience. The epistles most taken up in displaying the glory of the Divine grace, and magnifying the Lord Jesus, are the most particular in pressing the duties of the Christian life.

1 Timothy 5:8

"But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel."

Responsibility for one’s household is spoken of in unusually serious terms. Honour widows that are widows indeed, relieve them, and maintain them. It is the duty of children, if their parents are in need, and they are able to relieve them, to do it to the utmost of their power.
