Biblical figure

Who was Abraham?

Patriarch of Israel and central figure in the covenant promises.

First appears in Genesis 17:5 · 27 books · 76 chapters

Overview

Abraham stands near the center of the Bible’s language of promise, pilgrimage, faith, and covenant. He is called out of an old world into a future he cannot yet see, and that movement becomes a model for later Jewish and Christian reflection on obedience, trust, and divine calling.

He matters not only because he appears early in Genesis, but because later scripture keeps returning to him when it asks how promise, inheritance, faith, and belonging are meant to work. Paul, Hebrews, and the Gospels all treat Abraham as a foundational figure for understanding the long argument of scripture.
