Interpretation

The people were numbered to show God's faithfulness in thus increasing the seed of Jacob, that they might be the better trained for the wars and conquest of Canaan, and to ascertain their families in order to the division of the land.

Ahiezer Tribe: Brother of help; i. e., “helpful. ” (1. ) The chief of the tribe of Dan at the time of the Exodus ( Num. 1:12 ; 2:25 ; 10:25 ). (2. ) The chief of the Benjamite slingers that repaired to David at Ziklag ( 1 Chr. 12:3 ).
Ammishaddai Person: People of the Almighty, the father of Ahiezer, who was chief of the Danites at the time of the Exodus ( Num. 1:12 ; 2:25 ). This is one of the few names compounded with the name of God, Shaddai, “Almighty. ”.
