Interpretation

Here is a genealogy, or list of names, ending in Abram, the friend of God, and thus leading towards Christ, the promised Seed, who was the son of Abram. Nothing is left upon record but their names and ages; the Holy Ghost seeming to hasten through them to the history of Abram.

Glossary

Arphaxad Person: Son of Shem, born the year after the Deluge. He died at the age of 438 years ( Gen. 11:10-13 ; 1 Chr. 1:17 , 18; Luke 3:36 ).
Shem Person: A name; renown, the first mentioned of the sons of Noah ( Gen. 5:32 ; 6:10 ). He was probably the eldest of Noah’s sons. The words “brother of Japheth the elder” in Gen.
