Bible verses for someone in the hospital

Comforting and strengthening passages for hospital visits, get-well cards, and prayer during illness or recovery.

What Bible verses should you share with someone in the hospital?

When someone you love is in the hospital, finding the right words is hard. Scripture offers language for what cards and small talk cannot reach — honest comfort, strength for the suffering, and the assurance that God is near even in a hospital room.

These verses are chosen for bedside visits, text messages, and cards. They do not promise instant healing or minimize pain. They do promise presence, strength, and a hope that does not depend on the outcome of a medical test.

Key passages

Psalms 41:3

"The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness."

The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing. The people of God are not free from poverty, sickness, or outward affliction, but the Lord will consider their case, and send due supplies.

Psalms 46:1

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. This psalm encourages to hope and trust in God; in his power and providence, and his gracious presence with his church in the worst of times.

Isaiah 41:10

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

Fear thou not; for I am with thee — God’s direct assurance. God speaks with tenderness; Fear you not, for I am with you: not only within call, but present with you. Art you weak?

James 5:14

"Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:"

Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders — the classic healing-prayer passage. The sin of swearing is condemned; but how many make light of common profane swearing! Such swearing expressly throws contempt upon God's name and authority.

Psalms 103:3

"Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;"

Who healeth all thy diseases — a psalm of gratitude for restoration. By the pardon of sin, that is taken away which kept good things from us, and we are restored to the favor of God, who bestows good things on us.

2 Corinthians 1:3

"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;"

The God of all comfort, who comforteth us in all our tribulation. We are encouraged to come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
