Bible verses for headstones

Short, memorable passages commonly engraved on headstones, grave markers, and memorial plaques — verses on rest, eternal life, and remembrance.

What are the best Bible verses to put on a headstone or gravestone?

A headstone inscription has to carry the weight of a whole life in a few words. The Bible has been the primary source for gravestone inscriptions in the English-speaking world for centuries because its language is both brief and eternal.

These verses are chosen for their brevity and their power. Each one fits the physical constraints of stone engraving while saying something that matters about death, hope, rest, and the promises of God.

Key passages

John 11:25

"Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:"

I am the resurrection and the life — the most engraved funeral verse. Here was a house where the fear of God was, and on which his blessing rested; yet it was made a house of mourning. Grace will keep sorrow from the heart, but not from the house.

Revelation 14:13

"And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them."

Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord — rest from their labours. The progress of the Reformation appears to be here set forth. The four proclamations are plain in their meaning; that all Christians may be encouraged, in the time of trial, to be faithful to their Lord.

Psalms 23:4

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."

I will fear no evil: for thou art with me — universally recognized. Even in the darkest valley, David speaks with confidence because the Lord is with him. The comfort is not that danger disappears, but that God stays near and shepherds his people through it.

2 Timothy 4:7

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:"

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. The blood of the martyrs, though not a sacrifice of atonement, yet was a sacrifice of acknowledgment to the grace of God and his truth.

John 14:2

"In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you."

In my Father’s house are many mansions. Here are three words, upon any of which stress may be laid. Upon the word troubled.

Romans 8:38

"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,"

Neither death, nor life... shall separate us from the love of God. All things whatever, in heaven and earth, are not so great a display of God's free love, as the gift of his coequal Son to be the atonement on the cross for the sin of man; and all the rest follows upon union with him, and interest in him.

Main takeaways

  • The best headstone verses are brief enough to engrave but weighty enough to endure.
