Bible verses about self-worth

Passages that speak to human value, being made in God's image, being known and loved by God, and finding identity in Christ.

What does the Bible say about your worth and value?

The Bible grounds human worth not in achievement, appearance, or status but in the fact that every person is made in the image of God. The Psalms say you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Jesus said that you are worth more than many sparrows. Paul says you are God's workmanship.

These verses are for anyone struggling with feelings of inadequacy, comparison, or low self-regard. They point to a value that is given, not earned.

Key passages

Psalms 139:14

"I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well."

I am fearfully and wonderfully made. We cannot see God, but he can see us. The psalmist did not desire to go from the Lord.

Genesis 1:27

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."

God created man in his own image. Man was made last of all the creatures: this was both an honour and a favour to him.

Ephesians 2:10

"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. Sin is the death of the soul. A man dead in trespasses and sins has no desire for spiritual pleasures.

Matthew 10:31

"Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows."

You are of more value than many sparrows. The doctrines of Christ displeased the infidel Sadducees, as well as the Pharisees and Herodians. He carried the great truths of the resurrection and a future state, further than they had yet been reveled.

Jeremiah 1:5

"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."

Before I formed you in the belly I knew you. Jeremiah's early call to the work and office of a prophet is stated. He was to be a prophet, not to the Jews only, but to the neighbouring nations.

Isaiah 49:16

"Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me."

I have graven you upon the palms of my hands. Let there be universal joy, for God will have mercy upon the afflicted, because of his compassion; upon his afflicted, because of his covenant.
