Bible verses about repentance

Key passages on turning away from sin, returning to God, the call to repent, and the mercy that meets those who do.

What does the Bible say about repentance?

Repentance is the Bible's word for a complete change of direction. It is not merely feeling sorry but turning from sin and toward God. John the Baptist preached it, Jesus began his ministry with it, and Peter called for it at Pentecost.

These verses explain what repentance involves, what prompts it, and what God promises to those who repent. They are useful for personal reflection and for understanding the gospel call.

Key passages

Acts 2:38

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Peter calls the crowd to repent and be baptized. From the first delivery of that Divine message, it appeared that there was Divine power going with it; and thousands were brought to the obedience of faith.

2 Chronicles 7:14

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

If my people humble themselves and pray, I will heal their land. This verse speaks in the wider setting of temple and reform as 2 Chronicles unfolds its message.

1 John 1:9

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us. A message from the Lord Jesus, the Word of life, the eternal Word, we should all gladly receive. The great God should be represented to this dark world, as pure and perfect light.

Psalms 51:10

"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Purge me with hyssop, with the blood of Christ applied to my soul by a lively faith, as the water of purification was sprinkled with a bunch of hyssop. The blood of Christ is called the blood of sprinkling, Heb 12:24.

Joel 2:25

"And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you."

I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten. The priests and rulers are to appoint a solemn fast. The sinner's supplication is, Spare us, good Lord.

Luke 15:7

"I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance."

There is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents. The parable of the lost sheep is very applicable to the great work of man's redemption.
