Bible verses about grace

Key passages on God's unmerited favour, the grace of Christ, salvation by grace through faith, and how grace transforms the way believers live.

What does the Bible say about grace?

Grace is one of the most important words in the New Testament. Paul uses it to describe how salvation works: not by human effort but by the free gift of God. Grace is unmerited favour, and it stands at the centre of the Christian gospel.

These verses explore what grace is, where it comes from, what it does, and why it matters. They are foundational for understanding the Bible's message about how people are saved and how they are to live afterward.

Key passages

Ephesians 2:8

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:"

By grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. Sin is the death of the soul. A man dead in trespasses and sins has no desire for spiritual pleasures.

Ephesians 2:9

"Not of works, lest any man should boast."

Not of works, lest any man should boast. Sin is the death of the soul. A man dead in trespasses and sins has no desire for spiritual pleasures.

2 Corinthians 12:9

"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."

My grace is sufficient for you. The apostle gives an account of the method God took to keep him humble, and to prevent his being lifted up above measure, on account of the visions and revelations he had.

Romans 5:8

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

God demonstrates his love in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Christ died for sinners; not only such as were useless, but such as were guilty and hateful; such that their everlasting destruction would be to the glory of God's justice.

Titus 3:5

"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"

Not by works of righteousness that we have done, but by his mercy he saved us. Spiritual privileges do not make void or weaken, but confirm civil duties. Mere good words and good meanings are not enough without good works.

John 1:14

"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."

The Word was made flesh, full of grace and truth. There was great hatred between the Samaritans and the Jews. Christ's road from Judea to Galilee lay through Samaria.
